From time representation in scheduling to the solution of strip packing problems

چکیده
We propose two mixed-integer linear programming based approaches for the 2-D orthogonal strip packing problem. Using knowledge from the alternative forms of time representation in scheduling formulations, we show how to efficiently combine three different concepts into the xand ydimensions. One model features a discrete representation on the x-axis (strip width) and a continuous representation with general precedence variables on the y-axis (strip height). The other features a full continuous-space representation with the same approach for the y-axis and a single non-uniform grid made up of slots for the x-axis. Through the solution of a set of twenty nine instances from the literature, we show that the former is a better approach, even when compared to three alternative MILP models ranging from a pure discrete-space to a pure continuous-space with precedence variables in both dimensions. All models are available in www.minlp.org.

A THEORETICALLY CORRECT RESOURCE USAGE VISUALIZATION FOR THE RESOURCE-CONSTRAINED PROJECT SCHEDULING PROBLEM
The cumulative resource constraints of the resource-constrained project scheduling problem (RCPSP) do not treat the resource demands as geometric rectangles, that is, activities are not necessarily assigned to the same resource units over their processing times. In spite of this fact, most papers on resource-constrained project scheduling mainly in the motivation phase use a strip packing of re...

متن کاملSymmetry breaking generalized disjunctive formulation for the strip packing problem
The two-dimensional strip packing is a special case of “Cutting and Packing” problems that arises in many applications. The problem seeks to pack a given set of rectangles into a strip of given width in order to minimize its length. Some applications in which the strip packing problem arises are: Cutting pieces from wooden boards, cutting pieces from glass or steel sheets, optimal layout of ind...
متن کاملA new metaheuristic genetic-based placement algorithm for 2D strip packing
Given a container of fixed width, infinite height and a set of rectangular block, the 2D-strip packing problem consists of orthogonally placing all the rectangles such that the height is minimized. The position is subject to confinement of no overlapping of blocks. The problem is a complex NP-hard combinatorial optimization, thus a heuristic based on genetic algorithm is proposed to solve it. I...
متن کاملAn Improved Tabu Search Algorithm for Job Shop Scheduling Problem Trough Hybrid Solution Representations
Job shop scheduling problem (JSP) is an attractive field for researchers and production managers since it is a famous problem in many industries and a complex problem for researchers. Due to NP-hardness property of this problem, many meta-heuristics are developed to solve it. Solution representation (solution seed) is an important element for any meta-heuristic algorithm. Therefore, many resear...
